United States

Original Function
Used for sport of dog fighting, until 1835, when dog fighting was outlawed and the breed transitioned to the role of the companion dog.

Lifespan
10 to 12 years

Temperament
Eager to please, enthusiastic, friendly and willing to work.

Size and Proportion
Medium-sized and solidly built

Average Weight
Males: 35 to 60 Pounds
Females: 30 to 50 Pounds

Colors
Any color, color pattern or combination of colors is acceptable, except merle.

Coat type
Glossy and smooth, close, moderately stiff to the touch.

Grooming Needs
This shorthaired breed is easy to groom. Brush regularly and bathe as necessary.

Socialization
This people-loving breed needs early, positive exposure to people and children, but especially to other dogs and animals, as it can sometimes be dog aggressive.

Energy Level
HIGH

Exercise needs
Pit Bulls are active dogs and needs lots of exercise, such as long walks.

Training Needs
Eager to please, Pit Bulls are quick learners and catch on to obedience cues easily.
